A quieter, better night without a CPAP

If a CPAP machine isn't working for you, or you want a portable, lower-profile alternative, a custom oral appliance can be life-changing. The device gently positions your jaw forward to keep your airway open while you sleep.

When an oral appliance is the right call

We work with patients who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, those whose snoring is disrupting a partner's sleep, and CPAP-intolerant patients seeking an alternative. We coordinate with your sleep physician to make sure the right treatment is matched to the right diagnosis.

How it actually works

We take a digital scan of your teeth and a bite registration. Your appliance is custom-made by a specialty lab and fitted at a follow-up visit. Most patients adjust within a week and notice quieter, more restful sleep, and partners notice it even faster.

Oral appliance vs. CPAP, when each wins

CPAP is the gold standard for severe sleep apnea, when the airway needs constant positive pressure to stay open, nothing matches it. CPAP wins for: severe sleep apnea (AHI > 30), central sleep apnea, and patients who tolerate it well.

Oral appliances win for: mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea (AHI 5–30), CPAP intolerance (mask issues, claustrophobia, sinus problems), travel and portability, and patients who travel often. They're also dramatically easier to use, no power, no hose, no maintenance. For patients with mild-to-moderate apnea, success rates with appliances now rival CPAP.

Coordination with your sleep physician

Oral appliance therapy works best when coordinated with your sleep physician, they own the diagnosis and overall treatment plan; we own the device. At Cusp Dental, we communicate directly with your physician's office, share fitting and titration results, and forward any follow-up sleep study findings.

We don't replace your sleep physician; we add a treatment tool. Patients who try oral appliance therapy without their physician's knowledge often hit dead ends, the device works, but their broader sleep care isn't coordinated. We won't fit an appliance without a current diagnosis and physician collaboration.

What to expect, step by step

Here's exactly what happens at a sleep apnea & snoring relief appointment at Cusp Dental, from the moment you walk in to the followup.

  1. Sleep study review

We review your sleep-study results, your symptoms, and any prior CPAP experience. This is also when we discuss whether an oral appliance is the right fit (yes for most mild-to-moderate cases).

  2. Exam and 3D scan

We examine your jaw range of motion, bite, and TMJ. A 3D scan captures your teeth and bite registration for the lab.

  3. Lab fabrication

The appliance is custom-made over 2–3 weeks. It looks similar to a sport mouthguard but is two-piece, connected to position your lower jaw forward.

  4. Delivery and fitting

The appliance is fitted, adjusted, and tested. We start at a conservative position and titrate over the next few weeks as you adapt.

  5. Sleep study verification

About 6–8 weeks in, a repeat take-home sleep study confirms the appliance is effective at your current position. We adjust further if needed.

Pricing & insurance

We don't post per-service pricing here because every case is different. Call us at (916) 451-4856 for a personalized estimate. We verify your insurance benefits at no charge and give you a written all-in estimate before any treatment begins.

Insurance
Many medical insurance plans (NOT dental) cover oral appliances for diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. We submit medical insurance claims directly.
Financing
CareCredit financing available with extended-term options. We can also coordinate with HSA/FSA accounts.

Compared to lifetime CPAP costs (machine + supplies + replacements over 5–10 years), oral appliances often have lower total cost. Many patients use both, CPAP at home, appliance for travel or bad-symptom nights.

Common questions about sleep apnea & snoring relief

How do I know if I have sleep apnea?

Common signs include loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, and waking unrefreshed. A formal diagnosis requires a sleep study (in-lab or at-home) ordered by a physician, we can help coordinate.

Will my medical insurance cover an oral appliance?

Often yes, when prescribed for a diagnosed sleep apnea condition. Coverage varies by plan and we'll help verify benefits before treatment. Many patients find the device significantly more comfortable than a CPAP.

How long does the appliance last?

A well-cared-for appliance typically lasts 3–5 years. We monitor fit at routine cleanings and replace the device when it shows wear or your bite shifts.
