Why Does My Tooth Hurt When I Bite Down?

Tooth pain when biting is one of the most common reasons people search for a dentist online. The discomfort might feel sharp, sudden, or like pressure deep inside the tooth. While the pain may seem minor at first, it often signals that something inside the tooth or surrounding tissues needs attention.

At Cusp Dental in Sacramento, Dr. Arundeep Sidhu often sees patients who initially ignored bite pain, assuming it would disappear on its own. Unfortunately, the cause is rarely temporary.

A dental exam and digital X-ray are usually needed to identify the exact cause.

A Cracked Tooth Is a Common Cause

Tiny cracks in teeth are surprisingly common. They may happen after biting hard foods, grinding teeth during sleep, or after years of wear.

The crack may be invisible but still cause sharp pain when pressure is applied. If untreated, bacteria can enter the tooth and lead to infection.

Early treatment can often save the tooth with a crown.

Tooth Decay Can Cause Pressure Pain

When a cavity grows deeper inside a tooth, it can irritate the inner nerve tissue. At this stage, patients often feel pain while chewing or biting.

Treating the cavity early with a filling or crown can stop the progression before it becomes a root canal situation.

Bite Problems and Grinding

Many people unknowingly grind their teeth at night. This creates strong pressure on certain teeth and can cause soreness when biting.

In these cases, a custom night guard may help protect the teeth and relieve the pressure.

When You Should See a Dentist

Tooth pain that occurs when biting should not be ignored.

Schedule a dental visit if you notice:

  • pain that lasts more than a few days
  • sensitivity when chewing
  • swelling or gum tenderness
  • pain that comes and goes

A quick evaluation can identify the problem before it becomes more serious.

At Cusp Dental, Dr. Sidhu uses digital imaging and gentle diagnostic techniques to determine the exact source of pain and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
