I Broke a Tooth. What Should I Do Right Now?

Breaking a tooth can happen suddenly, while eating, playing sports, or biting something hard. Here's what to do in the first hour and how to protect the tooth until you can be seen.

Breaking a tooth can happen suddenly while eating, playing sports, or even biting something unexpectedly hard. The first reaction is often panic, but knowing what to do immediately can make a big difference in protecting the tooth.

At Cusp Dental in Sacramento, dental emergencies like broken teeth are a common reason patients call the office.

First Step: Stay Calm and Assess the Damage

Not all broken teeth require the same treatment. Some may involve only a small chip in the enamel, while others may expose deeper layers of the tooth.

Look for signs such as:

  • sharp edges
  • pain when biting
  • sensitivity to temperature
  • bleeding around the tooth

If severe pain or swelling occurs, contacting a dentist quickly is important.

Rinse Your Mouth

Rinsing with warm water helps clean the area and remove debris. This can reduce irritation and help you better see the extent of the damage.

Protect the Tooth

If the tooth has a sharp edge, dental wax or sugar-free gum can temporarily cover the area and prevent cuts to your tongue or cheek.

Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until the tooth is evaluated.

Save Any Broken Pieces

If a fragment of the tooth breaks off, place it in a small container with milk or saline solution and bring it with you to the dental office.

In some cases, dentists may be able to reattach the piece.

See a Dentist As Soon As Possible

Even small chips can expose the tooth to bacteria. A dentist can determine whether the tooth needs bonding, a crown, or another type of restoration.

Prompt treatment can prevent infection and preserve the natural tooth structure.

At Cusp Dental, emergency appointments are available to help patients in Sacramento receive quick care when dental injuries occur.
